Before you view the car
- Ask for the registration number and run a history check before travelling to see it, so a serious problem doesn't waste your trip.
- Check the seller's name matches the V5C keeper details they'll show you in person.
- Confirm the car's current MOT status and expiry date online before you go.
When you view it
- Meet at the seller's registered address, not a car park or motorway services. A seller unwilling to do this is a warning sign.
- Check the VIN in three places (dashboard, door pillar, V5C) all match.
- Compare the mileage on the odometer against your history check and any paperwork.
- Ask direct questions about accident history, ownership length, and reason for selling.
Paying and completing the sale
Never pay in full before seeing the car in person. Get a receipt with both parties' names, the date, the price, the registration, and "sold as seen" (or otherwise) clearly stated. Complete the V5C keeper-change section together, and tell DVLA of the change as soon as possible, rather than leaving it to the seller.
If time has passed since your first search, a lot can change. A fresh vehicle history check from MOTCO right before you hand over money confirms nothing has shifted since you first looked.
Common questions
Do I need to see the seller's ID when buying privately?
It's not a legal requirement, but it's good practice. Comparing their ID to the V5C keeper name is a simple way to reduce the risk of buying from someone who isn't entitled to sell the car.
What happens if I buy a car with hidden finance owed on it?
The finance company can, in some circumstances, repossess the car even from a buyer who acted in good faith. Running a finance check before paying is the way to avoid this.
