How much is my car tax per year?

For the 2026 to 2027 tax year, cars registered from 1 April 2017 usually pay a £200 standard yearly rate after their first licence. Older cars may be priced by CO2 emissions or engine size. Enter the registration above and we use the vehicle details with the DVLA V149 rates from 1 April 2026 to show the 12-month price, plus six-month and monthly options where they are available.

What are the 2026 to 2027 road tax rates?

Vehicle Excise Duty, road tax, is set by when the vehicle was first registered. Cars registered from 1 April 2017 pay a flat standard rate of £200.00 a year. Cars registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017 pay by CO2 band. Cars registered before March 2001 pay by engine size. These are the DVLA V149 rates from 1 April 2026.

Vans and light goods vehicles

A light goods vehicle up to 3,500kg registered on or after 1 March 2001 pays a flat £360.00 a year or £198.00 for six months, whatever its CO2 figure. Some Euro 4 and Euro 5 vans registered in narrow windows qualify for a lower £140.00 rate.

Is an electric car still free to tax?

No. Electric cars lost their exemption on 1 April 2025. An electric car registered from April 2017 now pays the same £200.00 standard rate as a petrol or diesel one.

What is the expensive car supplement?

Cars with a list price over £40,000 when new, or over £50,000 for electric cars, pay an extra £440.00 a year for five years from the second licence. A free registration lookup does not include the original list price, so this calculator shows it as a note rather than adding it to the total.

Why might we not show a single price?

Some vehicles cannot be priced from a free lookup. A van nameplate that is also sold as a people carrier, a motorhome, or a vehicle DVLA has not given a type approval for can fall into more than one tax class. Where that happens we show the possible prices rather than pick one and be confidently wrong.
