Audi service history check by registration

An Audi service history check shows the visits recorded against a car's registration, with dates, mileage and the garage. It matters on an Audi because many run on a flexible schedule, where up to two years between services can be normal, so a gap only means something once you know which schedule the car follows. It covers Audis from model year 2012 where a record is held.

Does Audi keep a digital service record?

Yes. Audi is part of the Volkswagen Group, which uses a Digital Service Schedule across its brands, and Audis built from around late 2012 moved onto it. Audi asks its centres to stamp the service book or update the digital record before the customer drives away, so a car can have either one, or both. On older cars more of the story may sit in the paper book, so read the two together.

The owner cannot edit a digital record. Entries come from registered garages, which makes it harder to fake than a stamped page and is why it is worth checking on a car with a tidy book and a high price.

How often should an Audi be serviced?

Audi UK runs two regimes for its petrol, diesel and hybrid models: flexible and fixed. Flexible servicing runs up to about 18,600 miles or two years, with the car working out the due date from how it is driven. Fixed servicing means an oil service about every 9,300 miles or one year, plus an inspection about every 18,600 miles or two years. Figures can differ by model, so check the handbook for the exact car.

This is why the regime matters to a buyer. A two-year gap on a flexible car may be exactly what the schedule allows. The same gap on a car on fixed servicing means a service was missed. Town cars and cars that do few miles are often better suited to fixed servicing, so a low-mileage Audi with very long gaps deserves a closer look.

What should an Audi's record show?

  • S tronic gearbox oil: many S tronic gearboxes have an oil change of their own, separate from the main service. Check the schedule for the gearbox fitted, then look for the entry.
  • Timing belt: TDI diesels and some petrol engines use a belt, due at an age or mileage set in the schedule. It is among the most expensive jobs to find missing.
  • Quattro oil: some quattro systems, on smaller models especially, have their own oil change. Ask whether it applies to the car you are viewing.
  • Brake fluid: typically changed about every two years after the first change.
  • Oil top-ups: some older 2.0 TFSI petrol engines used more oil than expected, so repeated top-ups are worth asking about.

How to read an Audi record before you buy

Work out the regime first, then read the gaps against it. Next, compare the mileage at each visit with the free MOT history. If a seller describes full Audi history, you should see visits at an Audi centre rather than one or two entries and a stamped book.

The check covers models such as the A1, A3, A4, A6, Q3, Q5 and TT. Independent specialists look after plenty of good Audis, and not all of them add to the digital record, so a short record is a reason to ask for invoices rather than to walk away.

What does a Audi service history check cost?

A Complete History Report costs £16.99 and lists each visit recorded for the car. It also includes the stolen, write-off and finance checks, so the service record and the risk checks arrive in one report. Ordered on its own, the payment is only authorised at first and taken once records are found. If there are none, the hold is released and you pay nothing.

If you only need the risk checks, the Vehicle Risk Check costs £9.99 and is charged when you order. Both are one-off payments with no subscription. See what each check includes, or read the full guide to a car service history check. ServiceBoss is independent and is not connected with Audi.

Common questions

Does an Audi need servicing every year?

Not always. A car on flexible servicing can run up to about two years between visits, while a car on fixed servicing has an oil service about once a year. The car's handbook and its last service invoice will show which applies.

How can I tell if an Audi is on fixed or flexible servicing?

Ask an Audi centre, or look at the service book and the last invoice. Regular visits about a year apart suggest fixed servicing, while longer and less even gaps suggest flexible. The car can be changed from one regime to the other, so check the latest visit.

Does a stamped Audi service book still count?

Yes, but a stamp is only as good as the garage behind it. Check that the mileage and dates are believable, and ring the garage if you can. A matching invoice is much stronger evidence than a stamp alone.
