BMW service history check by registration

A BMW service history check reads the servicing recorded against a car's registration: the dates, the mileage at each visit, the garage and, where the record goes that far, the work done. Use it to test a seller's claim of full BMW history before you travel or pay a deposit. It covers BMWs from model year 2012 where a record is held.

Does BMW keep a digital service record?

Yes. Newer BMWs carry a digital record of authorised servicing instead of relying on a stamped book. When a BMW dealer finishes a service, the entry goes into BMW's central system and syncs back to the car. On some newer models you can also read the history on the infotainment screen, so it is worth asking to see it at a viewing.

Independent garages can add entries too if they have the right access, and some charge for doing it. That means a car looked after by a good specialist can show fewer visits than it really had. Ask for the invoices before you treat a gap as neglect.

How often should a BMW be serviced?

Most BMWs from this period have no single fixed interval. Condition Based Servicing, which BMW has used since 2002, monitors items such as engine oil, brake pads and brake fluid, then works out what is due from how the car has been driven. The car's own display, not a calendar, sets the date.

So two identical cars can have very different records. A motorway car can go a long way between visits, while one used for short trips will ask sooner. Many BMW specialists still suggest an oil service about every 10,000 to 12,000 miles or 12 months, which can be more often than the display asks for. A longer gap is not automatically a fault, but it is a fair question for the seller.

What should a BMW's record show?

  • Engine oil and filter: the most common entry, and the one to look for at every main visit.
  • Brake fluid: specialists put this at roughly every two years, or whenever the service display asks. It is cheap to do and easy to skip, so it tells you how carefully the car has been kept.
  • Brake pads and discs: the system tracks wear, so replacement should appear at a mileage that makes sense for the car.
  • Filters and spark plugs: due at longer intervals, so look for them on higher-mileage cars, petrol models especially.
  • Timing chain: most modern BMW engines use a chain rather than a cambelt, so there is usually no belt change to find. Engine noise on a cold start is something for the test drive, not the record.

How to read a BMW record before you buy

Put the visits in date order and check that the mileage climbs steadily. Then compare it with the free MOT history, which DVSA records separately. The two should tell the same story. A drop in mileage, or a long run with no visits on a car the seller calls fully serviced, is worth raising before you pay anything.

The check covers models such as the 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X1, X3 and X5. A record only shows what was logged, so a blank result does not prove that a car was never serviced. It means the paperwork has to do the job instead.

What does a BMW service history check cost?

A Complete History Report costs £16.99 and lists each visit recorded for the car. It also includes the stolen, write-off and finance checks, so the service record and the risk checks arrive in one report. Ordered on its own, the payment is only authorised at first and taken once records are found. If there are none, the hold is released and you pay nothing.

If you only need the risk checks, the Vehicle Risk Check costs £9.99 and is charged when you order. Both are one-off payments with no subscription. See what each check includes, or read the full guide to a car service history check. ServiceBoss is independent and is not connected with BMW.

Common questions

Can I check a BMW's service history with only the registration?

Yes, for BMWs from model year 2012 where a record is held. You do not need the service book, the V5C or the seller's login. If no records are found, a Complete History Report ordered on its own costs you nothing.

Is a two-year gap between BMW services normal?

It can be, because Condition Based Servicing sets the interval from how the car is used. Check the mileage at each visit and what the service display says is due now. A long gap with high mileage deserves more questions than a long gap with low mileage.

Can an independent garage update a BMW's digital record?

Some can, if they have the right access, and there may be a fee. Ask the garage directly and ask the seller for invoices, because work at a garage without access will not appear in the record.
