Toyota service history check by registration

A Toyota service history check shows the visits recorded against a car's registration, with the date, the mileage and the garage. On a Toyota the record does more than show care: visits to an official centre are what switch on Toyota's Relax warranty, so a used car's history can change what cover you get. It covers Toyotas from model year 2012 where a record is held.

Why service history matters more on a Toyota

Toyota Relax is a warranty that a qualifying service at an official Toyota centre activates automatically. Each service adds 12 months or 10,000 miles of cover, whichever comes first, or 24 months or 20,000 miles on cars with two-year service intervals. This can repeat until the car reaches 10 years or 100,000 miles.

A car does not need a perfect past to qualify. Reports at launch said earlier servicing at an official centre is not required, so a Toyota with independent history can still start Relax at its next qualifying service, within those limits. The record tells you where the car stands and what to ask a Toyota centre before you buy.

How often should a Toyota be serviced?

Toyota servicing alternates between an Intermediate service and a Full service. The Intermediate is closer to an oil and filter change with checks, and the Full is a thorough inspection, which also covers items Toyota recommends replacing every two years. The exact interval depends on the model, and some cars are on two-year intervals, so check the schedule for the car you are viewing.

In the record, look for that alternating pattern with visits roughly a year apart, and read the mileage alongside it. Toyota's warranty terms run on time as well as miles, so a car doing few miles should still appear regularly if it has been kept on the Relax scheme.

What should a Toyota's record show?

  • Hybrid Health Check: owners report this being included in Intermediate and Full services. Toyota says hybrid battery cover under Relax runs to 10 years or 100,000 miles, and that further cover can be reached through a Hybrid Health Check up to the car's 15th year.
  • Full services: these should appear regularly, because the items due every two years are carried out at this visit.
  • Brake fluid and coolant: these depend on age, so look for them on an older, low-mileage Yaris or Aygo too.
  • Pollen filter: a small job, but a missing one suggests the car has had the minimum rather than a proper visit.

How to read a Toyota record before you buy

Note the date and mileage of the last visit to an official Toyota centre, then work out whether Relax cover could still be running. If it has lapsed, ask a Toyota centre what the next service would do for the car, and confirm the current terms with them. Then compare the mileage with the free MOT history.

The check covers models such as the Yaris, Corolla, Auris, Aygo, RAV4 and C-HR. A short record does not prove that a car was neglected. Toyotas are often kept going by independent garages, whose work will usually be on an invoice rather than on this record.

What does a Toyota service history check cost?

A Complete History Report costs £16.99 and lists each visit recorded for the car. It also includes the stolen, write-off and finance checks, so the service record and the risk checks arrive in one report. Ordered on its own, the payment is only authorised at first and taken once records are found. If there are none, the hold is released and you pay nothing.

If you only need the risk checks, the Vehicle Risk Check costs £9.99 and is charged when you order. Both are one-off payments with no subscription. See what each check includes, or read the full guide to a car service history check. ServiceBoss is independent and is not connected with Toyota.

Common questions

Does a used Toyota get the 10-year warranty?

It can. A qualifying service at an official Toyota centre activates Relax cover for 12 months or 10,000 miles, up to 10 years or 100,000 miles in total. Confirm the current terms and the car's status with a Toyota centre before relying on it.

Does an independent garage service keep Toyota Relax going?

Relax is activated by a service at an official Toyota centre, so a visit elsewhere does not activate it. Going elsewhere does not rule the car out of cover later, but check with a Toyota centre how that applies to the car.

What is the difference between a Toyota Intermediate and Full service?

The Intermediate is the smaller visit, close to an oil and filter change with checks. The Full is a thorough inspection and includes items recommended for replacement every two years. The two normally alternate.
