Volkswagen service history check by registration

A Volkswagen service history check shows the visits recorded against a car's registration, with the date, the mileage and the garage. It is especially useful on a used Golf, Polo or Tiguan, where a missed DSG oil change or cambelt can cost far more than the check. It covers Volkswagens from model year 2012 where a record is held.

Does Volkswagen keep a digital service record?

Yes. The Volkswagen Group's Digital Service Schedule is a digital record of servicing that replaces the traditional paper pages, and the group also uses it for SEAT, CUPRA, Škoda and Audi. Garages add to it through Volkswagen Group's workshop system, so independents with access can record their work as well as Volkswagen retailers.

Going digital did not happen overnight, so a car from the earlier part of this period may have a mix of book stamps and digital entries. What keeps a warranty intact is that servicing was carried out properly and documented, which can mean invoices as well as a digital entry.

How often should a Volkswagen be serviced?

Volkswagens run on either a fixed or a flexible schedule, depending on the engine and how the car is used. On a flexible schedule, a service light on the instrument panel comes on when a visit is due, so the gap depends on the driving. On a fixed schedule, garages typically quote an interim service about every 9,000 to 10,000 miles or 12 months.

When you read the record, start by asking which schedule the car follows. Long gaps can be fine on flexible servicing and are a warning on fixed. Either way, a low-mileage car still needs its time-based visits, so a car with very few entries over many years has questions to answer.

What should a Volkswagen's record show?

  • DSG gearbox oil: guidance for wet-clutch DSG gearboxes is an oil change at around 40,000 miles. Not every DSG has the same requirement, so check which gearbox the car has, then look for the entry.
  • Cambelt: many Volkswagen engines use a belt, replaced at an age or mileage set in the schedule. Ask for the invoice as well as the entry, because this job is costly and easy to claim.
  • Haldex oil: 4MOTION cars can have their own all-wheel drive oil change. It does not apply to front-wheel drive models.
  • Brake fluid: normally due about every two years after the first change, so it should appear more than once on an older car.

How to read a Volkswagen record before you buy

Line up the DSG and cambelt entries against the current mileage and age of the car. If either job is due soon and has not been done, you have something real to negotiate with. Then compare the mileage at each visit with the free MOT history.

The check covers models such as the Golf, Polo, Passat, Tiguan, T-Roc and Up. If nothing is found, that does not mean the car was never serviced. It may have been looked after by a garage that did not add to the record, so ask for the invoices.

What does a Volkswagen service history check cost?

A Complete History Report costs £16.99 and lists each visit recorded for the car. It also includes the stolen, write-off and finance checks, so the service record and the risk checks arrive in one report. Ordered on its own, the payment is only authorised at first and taken once records are found. If there are none, the hold is released and you pay nothing.

If you only need the risk checks, the Vehicle Risk Check costs £9.99 and is charged when you order. Both are one-off payments with no subscription. See what each check includes, or read the full guide to a car service history check. ServiceBoss is independent and is not connected with Volkswagen.

Common questions

Do Volkswagens still come with a paper service book?

Newer cars rely on the Digital Service Schedule, while cars from the earlier part of this period may have a paper book as well. If a seller has a book, read it alongside the digital visits and check that the dates and mileages agree.

How often does a DSG gearbox need an oil change?

Guidance for wet-clutch DSG gearboxes is around every 40,000 miles, though it differs by gearbox and owners report some revised figures. Check the schedule for the exact car, and look for the entry at the right mileage.

Does a Volkswagen need to go to a main dealer to keep its history?

No. Servicing has to be done properly and documented, and independent garages with access can add to the digital record. Keep the invoices either way, since they are the proof if an entry does not appear.
