EV charging: what to check before buying an electric car

Range on paper and range in practice aren't the same thing. Here's what actually matters before you commit to an electric car.

Home charging changes the calculation completely

If you can charge at home overnight, day-to-day range matters far less than it looks on paper, since the car starts most days close to full. Without home charging, you're relying on public infrastructure, and coverage varies a lot by area. Check what's realistically near your home and workplace before assuming a given range figure will suit your routine.

Charging speed: AC vs DC, and what the numbers mean

  • Home/AC charging (up to 7-22kW): typically an overnight charge, from empty to full in several hours depending on the wallbox and the car's onboard charger limit.
  • Public rapid/DC charging (50kW+): can take a car from low to around 80% in 30-60 minutes, though speed tapers sharply after 80% on most batteries, so the last 20% takes disproportionately longer.
  • Ultra-rapid (150kW+): only useful if the specific car can actually accept that rate. A car limited to 50kW won't charge any faster on a 150kW charger, the car's own limit is what counts, not the charger's maximum.

Check the car's actual maximum charging rate, not just the charger network's headline speed, the two are frequently different.

Battery health matters more than mileage

EV batteries degrade gradually with age and charge cycles, so a used EV's real-world range can be meaningfully lower than its original figure, especially on early models. A dealer or seller can often provide a battery health/state-of-health reading. If they can't or won't, treat that as a reason to ask more questions, not assume the worst, but don't skip asking.

Check public charging coverage before you buy, not after

Common questions

Does cold weather really reduce EV range?

Yes, noticeably. Range can drop by 10-30% in cold conditions due to battery chemistry and cabin heating, worth factoring in if you're relying on a tight range margin.

Should I buy an EV without home charging?

It's workable if public charging near you is reliable and reasonably fast, but check actual coverage for your routine first rather than assuming it'll be fine.
