MINI service history check by registration
A MINI service history check shows the visits recorded against a car's registration, with the date, the mileage and the garage. Used MINIs tend to change hands often, so the paperwork can be thin by the time you see one, and this gives you something to read that does not depend on the seller. It covers MINIs from model year 2012 where a record is held.

Does MINI keep a digital service record?
MINI is part of the BMW Group, and its retailers record servicing digitally in a similar way to BMW. The car also stores service data on its key, which a MINI service partner can read at the garage. So a car's service information does not depend only on a stamped book that may or may not have come with it.
Not every visit will be on the record. Independent MINI specialists look after a lot of these cars, older ones especially, and they may not add to it. A car with a short record and a folder of invoices from a specialist can be in better shape than its record suggests.
How often should a MINI be serviced?
Most MINIs use Condition Based Service, so there is no fixed mileage for every car. Sensors and the car's software work out what is due from driving style and the state of each part, and a reminder appears on the dashboard. A MINI that spends its life on short town trips will often ask sooner than one that cruises on motorways.
Time still counts. One UK MINI retailer puts the first brake fluid service three years after first registration and then every two years, and MINI's own maintenance booklets treat brake fluid as a date-based item. A low-mileage MINI should therefore still show regular visits, even if there are few miles between them.
What should a MINI's record show?
- Engine oil and filter: the core of most visits. On a car used mainly for short journeys, expect these to be closer together rather than further apart.
- Brake fluid: date-based, as above, so expect more than one change on a car over five years old.
- Timing chain: earlier 1.6 petrol engines are known for chain rattle on a cold start. Look for any chain work on the record and listen for it on the test drive.
- Run-flat tyres: where fitted, these wear differently from normal tyres. They may not be listed as service work, so read the tyre advisories in the MOT history too.
- Clutch: a wear item on manual Cooper S models. It is a repair rather than a service, so ask for the invoice if the seller says it has been done.
How to read a MINI record before you buy
Ask how the car has been used, then see whether the visits fit that answer. Short trips with long gaps do not fit well. Next, compare the mileage at each visit with the free MOT history, which DVSA records separately. The two should climb together.
The check covers models such as the Hatch, Cooper, Countryman and Clubman. A blank result does not mean that the car was never serviced. It means that you need to see the book and the invoices instead.
What does a MINI service history check cost?
A Complete History Report costs £16.99 and lists each visit recorded for the car. It also includes the stolen, write-off and finance checks, so the service record and the risk checks arrive in one report. Ordered on its own, the payment is only authorised at first and taken once records are found. If there are none, the hold is released and you pay nothing.
If you only need the risk checks, the Vehicle Risk Check costs £9.99 and is charged when you order. Both are one-off payments with no subscription. See what each check includes, or read the full guide to a car service history check. ServiceBoss is independent and is not connected with MINI.
Common questions
Does a MINI have a fixed service interval?
Most do not. Condition Based Service sets the next visit from how the car is driven and the state of its parts, then shows a reminder on the dashboard. Date-based items such as brake fluid still fall due with time.
How often does a MINI need new brake fluid?
One UK MINI retailer says the first change comes three years after first registration, then every two years after that. The car's service reminder is the one to follow, so check what it says at the viewing.
Is a MINI with specialist servicing a bad buy?
Not at all. Specialists look after many of these cars and may not add to the digital record. Ask for the invoices, then check that their dates and mileages line up with the MOT history.
