Nissan service history check by registration

A Nissan service history check shows the visits recorded against a car's registration, with the date, the mileage and the garage. It is a quick way to test the history on a used Qashqai or Juke, where a low price often comes with several previous owners and thin paperwork. It covers Nissans from model year 2012 where a record is held.

Does Nissan keep a service record?

Nissan dealers record the work they carry out, and that is what a check by registration reads. Nissan also supplies a warranty booklet with a maintenance record, so a used car can come with stamps as well. Read the two together, because one may hold visits that the other does not.

Visits to independent garages may appear only in the book or on invoices. That is normal on a car that has left the dealer network, so a record that thins out after the warranty years is a reason to ask questions rather than a reason to walk away.

How often should a Nissan be serviced?

Nissan UK says servicing is usually based on an annual visit, but that it can be sooner for high-mileage drivers and for EVs and commercial vehicles. It also says a car has to be serviced every year or at the recommended mileage to keep the manufacturer warranty valid, and that a Minor Service should alternate with a Major Service.

Exact mileages are set per model in Nissan's Service and Maintenance Guide. Independent guides put the latest Qashqai at up to 18,000 miles, compared with 12,500 miles on earlier cars, so check the figure for the car in front of you. On the Leaf, Nissan's warranty booklet says drivers doing under 18,000 miles a year are on a time-based interval, so a low-mileage Leaf should still show regular visits.

What should a Nissan's record show?

  • Major Services: look for these alternating with Minor Services. A run of only the smaller visit suggests the bigger jobs were skipped.
  • CVT gearbox fluid: Nissan treats this as its own item with its own interval, and schedules differ by model and market. Ask a Nissan dealer for the figure, and look for the job on higher-mileage automatics.
  • Diesel particulate filter: dCi diesels used for short trips can have DPF trouble, so repeated work here is worth asking about.
  • Leaf servicing: a service record will not tell you the state of the battery. Read the car's capacity display and see our EV checks before buying as well.

How to read a Nissan record before you buy

Start with the first few years, because a nearly new car needed regular servicing to keep its warranty valid. Gaps here suggest the first owner did not keep up. Then read the later years, and compare the mileage at each visit with the free MOT history, which DVSA records wherever the car was serviced.

The check covers models such as the Qashqai, Juke, Micra, X-Trail and Leaf. If nothing is found, it does not mean that the car was never serviced, so ask for the book and any invoices instead.

What does a Nissan service history check cost?

A Complete History Report costs £16.99 and lists each visit recorded for the car. It also includes the stolen, write-off and finance checks, so the service record and the risk checks arrive in one report. Ordered on its own, the payment is only authorised at first and taken once records are found. If there are none, the hold is released and you pay nothing.

If you only need the risk checks, the Vehicle Risk Check costs £9.99 and is charged when you order. Both are one-off payments with no subscription. See what each check includes, or read the full guide to a car service history check. ServiceBoss is independent and is not connected with Nissan.

Common questions

How often does a Nissan Qashqai need a service?

Nissan works on an annual service, or sooner on higher mileage, with the exact mileage set per model. Independent guides put the latest Qashqai at up to 18,000 miles and earlier cars at 12,500 miles. Check the car's own guide.

Does a Nissan Leaf need regular servicing?

Yes. Nissan's warranty booklet says that drivers doing under 18,000 miles a year are on a time-based interval. An electric car has fewer parts to replace, but a low-mileage Leaf should still show regular visits.

Does a service history check show the Leaf's battery health?

No. It shows servicing visits, not battery capacity. Check the capacity display on the car and ask the seller about charging habits, then treat the service record as one part of the picture.
